Introduction

Fostering a teenager gives you the opportunity to make a profound and lasting difference at a pivotal time in a young person’s life. Teenagers in care are just like any others, they need care, support, stability and someone who believes in them. Many have experienced challenging backgrounds, which can sometimes show up in their behaviour. With your support, they can begin to build confidence, independence and hope for a brighter future.

Whether you offer short‑term, long‑term or short break care, your guidance will help a young person transition towards adulthood with confidence and resilience.

WHAT’S INVOLVED & WHO COMES INTO OUR CARE

Teenagers in foster care come from a range of backgrounds and circumstances. Some have experienced trauma, neglect or disruption in their family life, and many are navigating the emotional and practical challenges of adolescence. Like all young people, they need:

  • A safe, stable home where they can feel valued and respected

  • Emotional support to help them navigate feelings, relationships and change

  • Practical guidance with education, routines and life skills

  • Encouragement towards independence as they prepare for adulthood

Teenagers are at a crucial stage of life on the verge of independence. With your care, and the training and support we provide, you can help them make positive choices and build confidence for the future.

WHO CAN FOSTER

We welcome carers from all backgrounds. To be considered as a foster carer for teenagers, you should:

Have a spare bedroom

Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)

Have experience of interacting with children or young people

Be a British citizen or have Leave to Remain in the UK

SUPPORT FOR CARERS

Fostering teenagers is for single individuals, couples, and families, whether you have your own children or not. What matters most is your commitment to offering support, stability and genuine care.

Foster Carer Allowances

All foster carers receive financial support to help with the care of a child. The amounts are the same across all companies:

Weekly Allowance:

  • £436.24 per week

Additional Benefits:

  • Summer Holiday Payment: £300

  • Child’s Birthday Payment: £150

  • Christmas Payment: £150

  • Annual Carer Bonus: £200

These payments cover the child’s essential needs and recognise the important work of foster carers.

The organisation values the contribution foster carers make in recruiting new foster carers. Rewards are paid for each new foster carer you refer:

  • Introductory Fee: £100 - for introducing a potential carer

  • On Approval: £500 - once the new foster carer is approved

  • First Child Placement: £1,000 - when the new foster carer takes in their first child

This programme encourages experienced foster carers to share their knowledge and help expand the network of support for children.

"We want children to achieve their potential, no matter where they come from or what challenges they meet along the way."
