If you’re going through the fostering assessment process, one of the key milestones is the home visit. It’s completely natural to feel a little nervous, but understanding what to expect will help you feel much more at ease. This guide explains everything you need to know.
What Is a Fostering Home Visit?
A fostering home visit is a visit to your property by a Social Worker from Futures Group as part of the fostering assessment process. The purpose is to assess whether your home is a safe, suitable and welcoming environment for a foster child, and to get to know you and your household better.
Why Are Home Visits Important?
Home visits are a critical part of ensuring that every child placed in foster care has a safe and appropriate home. They also give your Assessing Social Worker the opportunity to see how you interact with your family, observe your home environment in person, and discuss fostering in a relaxed setting.
How Many Home Visits Will There Be?
There will typically be several home visits throughout your assessment , usually between four and eight, depending on your individual circumstances. The first visit tends to be more of an initial conversation, while later visits form part of the in-depth Form F assessment and explore your history, motivations, relationships and parenting approach.
What Questions Will You Be Asked?
During home visits you can expect to be asked about a wide range of topics. Common areas of discussion include:
Your reasons for wanting to become a foster carer
Your childhood and upbringing, including any significant experiences
Your relationships, both past and present
Your approach to parenting, boundaries and behaviour management
Your support network i.e who is around to help you if you need it
Your understanding of the needs of children in care
Your employment, finances and daily routine
Your home — including spare bedroom, safety features and pets
What Are Assessors Looking For in the Home?
Your Social Worker will be looking to confirm that your home meets the basic requirements for fostering. This includes:
A spare bedroom of suitable size for the age of child you are approved for
Working smoke alarms on every floor
Securely stored medications, cleaning products and other hazardous substances
A garden or outdoor space that is safely enclosed (if applicable)
A clean, safe and welcoming environment overall
How Can You Prepare for a Home Visit?
The most important thing is simply to be yourself. Your Social Worker is not expecting a show home, they are looking for a warm, safe and genuine environment. That said, there are a few practical steps you can take:
Make sure your home is clean and tidy, but don’t stress about it being perfect
Check your smoke alarms are working and that medications are locked away
Think about the answers to common questions in advance so you feel prepared
Have a cup of tea ready — these visits are meant to feel relaxed and conversational, not like a formal interview
